PRESS RELEASE BY ENUGU WEST PEOPLES' PARLIAMENT ON ATTACK ON SEN PROF EKWEREMADU
PRESS RELEASE BY ENUGU WEST PEOPLES' PARLIAMENT.
1. We the members of Enugu West Peoples’ Parliament, a Non Governmental Pressure Group received the unwarranted attack on our great son, the former Deputy President of the Senate and Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District, His Excellency, Prof Sen. Ike Ekweremadu CFR, with shock and utmost dismay.
2. We wish to condemn in totality this dastardly, cowardly and sacrilegious attack by members of IPOB in far away Nuremberg, Germany and also condemn the threats by IPOB to attack South East Governors and other Igbo leaders.
3. Let us also use this medium to appreciate all concerned Nigerians for rising in their numbers to condemn this act of brazen hooliganism. Prominent among them include, the Federal Government of Nigeria, whose prompt reaction came through the Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri, the Senate President, Deputy President of the Senate, PDP Senate and Representative Cacus, whose reactions came through Senate Minority Leader, Senator Eyinna Abaribe and House Deputy Minority Leader, Hon Toby Okechukwu, President General, Chief Nnia Nwodo and indeed all the state chapters of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. The PDP National Youth Leader, Hon Sunny Udokoye, other Youth Organizations in Nigeria and all other individuals and organisations that have reacted to this show of shame by these miscreants.
4. Let's place on record that the Senator has done so much for his constituents, the Igbo Nation, Nigeria and the West African sub region. Within his Constituency and the South East of Nigeria, Ekweremadu has demonstrated quality representation by attracting numerous infrastructure including, roads and bridges, water projects, dams, electricity projects, just to mention but a few. His Non Governmental Organization, the Ikeoha Foundation has provided Scholarship and Busary awards to over 6000 indigent students, assisted adult learners on how to read and write, provided assistance to women and youths in so many ways too numerous to mention . The list is endless.
5. His contributions on the floor of the Senate towards the South East Development Bill speak volumes of his love for the Igbo.
6. Senator Ekweremadu was instrumental alongside other Igbo Senators in ensuring the bail of IPOP leader, Nnamdi Kanu. He wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari to condemn Operation Python Dance; drew the attention of the President to possibilities of the Python Dance escalating to another civil war; urged the President to address the obvious marginalization of the Igbo, etc are all these were duly in various news media. He also led Igbo leaders to the President to address the above concerns.
7. Indeed, Ekweremadu deserves every respect from every true Igbo son. That is to say that according to Chief Nnia Nwodo, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo,"an assault on Ekweremadu is assault to the entire Igbo nation".
8. We also condemn in totality the threat to attack the South East governors and other Igbo leaders anywhere outside Nigeria by IPoB
To this end, we demand and state as follow:
a. Thorough investigation, arrest and prosecution of all those who planned and carried out the attack on Sen. Ike Ekweremadu at Nuremberg, Germany on August 17, 2019.
b. An explanation by the organisers of the Iriji celebration at Nuremberg and why they failed to provide security for Ekweremadu who in his usual act of patriotism honoured their invitation.
c. We urge the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Nigerian Embassy in Germany and the Nigerian Diaspora Commission to rise to the occasion to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
d. Other Igbo diaspora organizations should take note of the threats of these miscreants masquerading as those fighting for Igbo agenda and ensure that adequate security is provided in all genuine Igbo activities abroad.
e.We urge the current Igbo leaders who are currently occupying various political and cultural offices not to be distracted by the IPoB threats in their passionate efforts to serve the Ibo nation.
In conclusion, we like to state that agitations all over the world are more successful through peaceful and democratic means.
We therefore urge our current leaders to continue in their democratic and peaceful means to actualize our aspirations.
Thank you!
